The Slow Felted Treasures workshop is all about creating beautiful and meaningful textured pieces of handmade felt, using merino wool and silk fabrics and exploring the endless possibilities these materials offer. This year I am offering the possibility of creating a beautiful book, employing proper bookbinding techniques (see photos). The process is slow and considered, some might even consider the process meditative, this class is all about quality, not quantity! Your work can include small pieces of fabric or thread, perhaps a scrap of old loved fabric or a treasured remnant. Combined with wool, a prefelt will be made which will then be stitched into, cut, reshaped and felted some more. The process will be repeated several times to create exquisite textured surfaces which can then be further enhanced with stitch if required. Forget all about feltmaking being hard work, using my techniques it’s a very gentle and relaxing process, no heavy rolling required, so ideal for anyone who has wanted to make felt but thinks it’s too hard physically! Also it can all be done sitting down… Suitable for any level of experience, this class is not only aimed at feltmakers, but also at embroiderers and anyone who loves to stitch as handmade felt is a wonderful surface to stitch into and onto.

The aim of the Felt Art Creations class is to create a piece (or pieces) of felt art using and exploring the possibilities of found and recycled fabrics, a technique which I have embraced and been developing for several years. This class starts in the same way to the Slow Felted Treasure class by making prefelts, but leads to a bigger piece of work with less stitching (although you can of course carry on stitching at home…) Before the class I would like you to give some thought as to the size/shape/format of what you would like to produce during the workshop. It may be that you would like to make something big, or you may want to produce a series of small pieces, or something in between. It is important to consider where you might hang or place this piece of work you are going to make, where you may have wall space, where you want to display your finished piece. I also need you to think about colour – what colours you want to use, so that your art will sit well in your living space. This technique is effective for any size work, and I often machine- and/or hand-stitch into it as well to add extra effect and surface design. This class is intermediate/advanced level, not suitable for beginners.
